Chesterfield Panthers RUFC: A new era for rugby in Chesterfield

Chesterfield Panthers’ new Dunston Road home was officially unveiled by the immediate past president of the RFU, Paul Murphy. Member and Chair of the relocation committee Graham Bell received a lifetime achievement award on the day to commemorate his contribution to the Panthers’ relocation to its new ground.

MP Toby Perkins, himself a former player, addressed the 100-strong gathering held at the new clubhouse: “I am thrilled that Chesterfield Panthers have the new ground they have wanted so long. The club’s new facilities will raise the profile of rugby in the local area, improve participation in sport and benefit the wider community.”

The opening marked the end of a 25-year struggle to make the club’s vision for improved rugby facilities and a community resource a reality. It also marked the beginning of a new era for Chesterfield Panthers RUFC.

Thanks to significant funding from a number of sources, including Sport England, Rugby Football Foundation and Derbyshire County Council, Chesterfield Panthers now has a 23-acre landscaped sports ground boasting outstanding facilities, including three rugby pitches, a cricket square, 2 football pitches and a Multi-Use Games Area as well as our clubhouse, which includes six changing rooms.

Sport England’s Property Director Charles Johnston said: “Good sports facilities play an important role in local communities; they not only improve people’s sporting experience but also help attract new participants. The popularity of this fund has exceeded our expectations showing an appetite from sports clubs up and down the country to celebrate the legacy the Olympic and Paralympic games.”

Panthers’ have been on winning form this season, coupled with the outstanding facilities at the club, has helped bring it to the attention of a number of sponsors, including Franke, Gordon Maun Motors, NIBE, Somersall Financial Management, Gordon Lamb and MSE Hiller, Knights Care and Saltergate Physiotherapy, Stratstone BMW all keen to invest in the community and future of rugby in Chesterfield.

The club has 16 teams in total, offering playing and training opportunities for players of all abilities and levels, girls and boys as young as 2 years old, through its Panther Cubs, helping the club spot and develop talent in its junior players from a very young age.
