Derek Sherlock named as Peak FM's Local Sport Hero

In a fitting end to an outstanding season, Chesterfield Panthers’ 1st XV coach Derek Sherlock has been crowned Peak FM’s Local Hero for his contribution to sport.

The award, which was sponsored by Synergy Sport Academy, was presented at a glittering ceremony held at Chesterfield’s Casa Hotel on Friday 13 June 2014.

The Local Heroes event celebrates and recognises the amazing achievements of local people across North Derbyshire.  People who have in some way made a difference to their local community, shown courage and bravery and helped make our area a better place.

Derek joined Chesterfield Panthers at the beginning of the 2013/14 season. Under his leadership he took the 1st XV to the top of the league and clinching the team promotion for the first time in 28 years.

Derek, who was nominated for the award by club members and players, said: “I was overwhelmed to receive the award. What I have achieved at the club this season could not have been done without the true team spirt amongst the players and belief in me.

“It is a great honour to receive this prestigious award, however it is as much for my wife Jill as it is for me. When I should have been in retirement and enjoying our time together I threw myself headlong into coaching the team and she had to take a back seat.

“The players trained so hard throughout the season and brought a level of professionalism to the club that is normally associated with structured top class rugby. Long may it continue!”

Prior to moving to Chesterfield Panthers Sherlock was Head Coach at Dronfield RUFC where he helped take the club from Division Midlands 5 to Midlands 2 in the League, finishing in a creditable 3rd place last season.

Captain Steve Avenier said: “We went into the season with a completely different approach and ethic. This was down to Derek Sherlock. He added structure to the Panthers’ game and got the lads playing in a way that we all knew what was going to happen two steps ahead.

“He joined us with some trepidation last year. By his own admission he admits that during the first few training sessions he had with us, he did wonder what he’d got himself into, but together we turned it around and the award is not only well deserved but testament to this.”
