Panthers secure promotion

Chesterfield Panthers 1st XV achieved what they promised to do when they moved to their new £1.8 million ground and facilities in Dunston – achieve promotion.

A 44 – 20 victory away against Belper on Saturday 15th March not only secured the mighty Panthers their 14th win in a row but also promotion to Midlands 3 East (North). It is Panthers’ first promotion in 15 years.

Now all they need to do is continue their winning streak until the end of the season and take the top position in the table. They currently hold the top position and have three games left in hand. The final match of the season is on Saturday 12th April away to Leesbrook, when Panthers will learn whether they have achieved the double.

Following the victory coach Derek Sherlock said: “Although not playing to our full potential and some questionable defence, I am over the moon that we have guaranteed promotion today. We now look to cap off such a successful season by winning our final three games to become champions.”

Breakfast for Champions at Chesterfield Panthers RUFC

We were delighted to host the first Chesterfield Champions Breakfast of 2014 last Thursday 30th January 2014. The breakfast meeting was all about 2014 and Destination Chesterfield exciting plans, for the year ahead.

It really was great to see the clubhouse being fully utilised and even better to welcome so many local faces and businesses and show them the fabulous new facilities we have on offer.

Peter Swallow initially addressed the Chesterfield Champions & congratulated Chesterfield Borough Council on winning their placemaking team award on earlier in the week. Our very own Graham Bell then took centre stage and welcomed everyone the Panthers Clubhouse. He highlighted the great work the Chesterfield Champions achieve by working together and the importance of community ties and local businesses working together.

Destination Chesterfield Manager, Dom Stevens, then began sharing the plans for Chesterfield in 2014. We found out there will be more sector specific activity from Destination Chesterfield for manufacturing &engineering, creative & digital & for retail. There will be yet more FREE business workshops in association with the Chesterfield Borough Council Innovation Support Project.

Following on from the huge success of the first Chesterfield Food and Drink Awards last year there will be a second in 2014 and a new Retail Awards. Finally we will also see the launch of the ‘Made in Chesterfield’ project which will allow a focus to be made on the manufacturing and engineering companies, based in Chesterfield.

It really was a great morning and it was great to be surrounded by such positivity from the local business community.

Panthers-go-top-of-the-table

Chesterfield Panthers got off to a flying start this New Year, with an imposing 51-12 victory against Long Eaton this weekend. After more than 10 years in Midlands 4 East (North) Division, Chesterfield Panthers produced a dominant display to put them top of the table.

This is a great start to 2014 for our 1st XV and brought the Panthers’ consecutive game wins to eight, of which seven have been league games. The result means the Panthers go ahead of their promotion rivals Amber Valley, who lost away. Panthers’ position at the top was further cemented when local rivals Tupton RUFC also lost.

Chesterfield Panthers’ 1st XV captain, Steve Avenier commented: “We have continued to build and work hard over the Christmas break and to perform how we did today is a testament to all the players’ hard work. We are building a unique culture at Chesterfield, which is delivering results.”

Avenier added: “Today’s 51-12 win against Long Eaton and move to the top of the table sends a clear message to our rivals that we are the best team in the league. We are focused on promotion and we have the squad to do it.”

This season the Panthers have been soaring high and much credit must be given both to the move and fantastic new facilities, which has seemed to breathe life into the team and club and also the focus and commitment of the team. The Panthers must now continue to build on this momentum and push forward for the rest of the season, with the ultimate aim of the title victory.

Even with the current winning streak, the Panthers cannot afford to lie on their laurels now though and have some tough matches coming up. Panthers are now on the prowl for further success with top of the table clashes in January against Amber Valley and Tupton.

The club and team would like to take this opportunity to thank, all of those who have supported us through the move and the start of the season and wish you all the very best for 2014. Promotion here we come!
